Tours in Northern KwaZulu Natal South Africa

Northern KwaZulu Natal offers numerous attractions, and the N2 north of Durban is, therefore, one of the most interesting stretches in South Africa. First on the list is a visit to Shakaland Zulu Cultural Village in Eshowe where you get an introduction to the culture of the Zulu people. The Umfolozi and Hluhluwe Game Reserve - known for its great game stock, especially rhinos - can be reached via Mtubatuba or from Hluhluwe. Accommodation is scarce in this very popular park and one might have to stay overnight in Hluhluwe or in St. Lucia. Same applies to the Mkuzi Game Reserve.

The game reserves of Umfolozi and Hluhluwe became nature conservation areas back in 1895, which places them among the oldest game parks in Africa. There is a road going through both reserves, so that the visitor in fact moves around in one big game park.

The gentle hills represent a piece of original African savannah. The "big five" - rhinos, elephants, lions, buffaloes and leopards can be found here, together with a number of other species. A wide web of well maintained sand roads leads through the reserves, and can get quite slippery after heavy rainfalls. Visitors have the opportunity to go on walks through the wilderness under the guidance of an experienced ranger. Whatever you do do not miss the Umfolozi wilderness hiking trail. Other than these guided tours, one may for obvious reasons never leave the car in the park. The only exceptions are the beautifully situated resting spots which should only be used with the greatest caution.

The Greater St. Lucia Wetlands Park presents unique tropical wetlands with hippos and crocodiles, lagoons and coastal lagunes. Travelling further north the Sodwana Bay National Park and the Kosi Bay Nature Reserve in Maputaland are paradises for divers and anglers.
